TROUBLESHOOTING
If you are experiencing problems running ASL, check the following:
• Long delay upon program termination
If you experience a long delay upon program termination and the hourglass mouse cursor is present, try moving the mouse to force a screen refresh and exit the program.
• Make sure the program has enough memory available
In the Finder, go to the Apple menu (top left of screen) and select "About this Macintosh." The "Largest Unused Block" should be at least 16,000k. If it is below 16,000k, make sure that no other applications are running. (You can check this by clicking on the Macintosh icon on the top-right corner of your menu bar. "Finder" should be the only application listed.) If no other applications are running and your Largest Unused Block is still below 16,000k, you should turn on or increase your virtual memory.
• Turning on Virtual Memory
In the Finder, go to the Apple menu (top left of screen), select "Control Panels" and then select the item "Memory. On the pop-up panel, find the Virtual Memory section and switch it on. You will need to restart your computer to have this change take effect. (Note: You can change the size of the Virtual Memory in the box on the right side. Usually, the default setting is sufficient.)
SPECIAL NOTES
• It is NOT recommended that you run programs simultaneously with ASL. If our program is forced to run in the background, it can cause conflicts with applications in the foreground.
• To avoid printing problems, be sure to turn background printing OFF. This can be done via the Chooser under the Apple Menu at the top left corner of the screen.
• Printer sharing should also be turned off. This can be done via the Chooser under the Apple menu.
• Performance problems may arise when Appletalk is on and you are connected to a network. If you notice slowdowns during use, make sure you are disconnected from the network.
• You should be sure to always run the program from the Hard Disk.
• To avoid database conflicts ensure that File Sharing is turned off. This can be done via the File Sharing Control Panel.
SPECIAL NOTE FOR POWERMACS
Best results are obtained if:
1) Modern Memory Manager is turned off
2) Virtual Memory is turned on. The lower the Virtual Memory size, the better the performance.
3) Cache Size is set to 128k or less (sound tends to break up the larger the cache size)
* The Memory Control Panel controls each of these features.
